What is the difference between my M-W account and my subscription in the app?

Great question! Your Merriam-Webster user log-in account is a free account you create in the app or online. It allows you to access your Saved Words from the app on different devices and by logging in on our website. It was added to our app in early 2020, and having an existing ad-removal subscription in the app does not automatically create a Merriam-Webster account for you.

If you purchase an ad-removal or upgrade subscription in the app, you will be asked to create a user log-in account. It is not required that you create an account, however, because your subscription will be linked to your Apple ID or Google Play Store account. Therefore, deleting your free Merriam-Webster account will not also cancel your subscription. In order to manage your app subscription, you will need to go through the app store through which it was purchased. For more information, see this article.
